“If ecstasy be present, then I say there is fine literature, if it be absent, then, in spite of all the cleverness, all the talents, all the workmanship and observation and dexterity you may show me, then, I think, we have a product (possibly a very interesting one), which is not fine literature… Substitute, if you like, rapture, beauty, adoration, wonder, awe, mystery, sense of the unknown, desire for the unknown… For some particular case one term may be more appropriate than another, but in every case there will be that withdrawal from the common life and the common consciousness.”

Comment on New American Cities: Sunyata Woods and Sankhara Rapids by Glenn Wallis https://tricycle.org/article/new-american-cities-sunyata/#comment-139503 Wed, 13 Dec 2023 23:53:34 +0000 https://tricycle.org/?p=70122#comment-139503 This piece is so refreshing. I have long lamented the fact that Buddhist literature is by and large prosaic and uninspired. Sure, there are those wild sutras and tantras (the Avatamsaka, for example). But, to my mind, at least, those works turn out to be tedious at best and mind-numbingly tendentious at worst. Koteff’s writing gives me hope for a Buddhist literature that is, well, LITERATURE — probing, subtle, insightful, imaginative, inviting reflection, and highly intelligent. I applaud Tricycle for having the sensitivity to publish Koteff’s two pieces. Thank you!

One can save the article as a PDF to iBooks or Kindle app and organize in a folder. Alternatively, one could copy or cut out the article from the hard copy magazine and file it. On could also buy the book from which this article is excerpted Much wisdom here to revisit.

It was very timely, as something similar happened to me yesterday, and later I jotted it down.

“On The Go” Tonglen

I was sitting at an intersection
And a man blew through a red light.

Horns were blowing everywhere

Fingers flipped in rage

I noticed he was waving back sincere apologies

Mea culpa

As he passed me by, his head was buried in
guilt
shame
sadness

It all immediately came to me.
All these emotions
resulting in a wellspring of tears

And I took them in.

I had no choice.

Was he just diagnosed with cancer?
Is his child ill?
Did his mother just die?
Did he lose his job?

I sent him good wishes.

Others film and video from the site are ok for me so I guess there is an issue with the URL ?

Best, and thanks for the film club
