Mrs Ink and I just had a pretty great cup of tea. There must have been a good 3 or 4 minutes teabag steeping first and the whole thing was just so hot, flavoursome and thirst-quenching I was almost panting by the end. My English reserve means I hesitate to share this kind of stuff in a public sphere like TNM, but we Brits are also prurient voyeurs, so come on everyone, let’s hear about what you get up to when you’re drinking tea!
I brewed two types of tea yesterday that fell under the general ‘English breakfast’ umbrella, and noticed that the Russian Caravan did not produce as much sediment in the cup, and thus maintained consistent strength throughout. This was enjoyable.
I think I might make some tea right now
Strictly speaking, I did not have this tea; but this morning, my lady and I were out for brunch, and she asked for Green Tea. The waitress said they were out of green tea, but they had Earl Grey, so my lady ordered that.
A few minutes later, the waitress came back with two teabags. “We did have green tea after all, so I brought you a bag of that and a bag of the Earl Grey,” she said. My lady opted to drink the green, and quietly slipped the Earl Grey teabag into her purse for later.
Update: I drank some tea. Gen mai cha. It was good.
I’ve never been able to stand tea, especially green tea, which I gather is the healthiest kind. For about three weeks once I actually forced myself to choke down a cup of green tea every morning for the health benefits. I dreaded it though, and I hate having to prepare anything to eat or drink, even something as simple as tea. So I don’t think I’m going to try that experiment again.
I’m guessing that if I drowned the tea in enough sugar and honey it would taste all right, but at that point I have to think that the health benefits are outweighed by the harm the sugar does.
I never used to like tea until I started making green and white teas myself and making sure not to steep them too long.
I made some Ooolong this morning. I have been making quite a bit more tea since getting an electric tea kettle; I don’t have to use my thermometer any more, just set it for 170 F or whatever and it goes quick.
Ryan, are you able to describe what you don’t like about the taste?
Is it too ‘grassy’ or ‘cat pee’ for you?

man do I ever love gen mai cha
Too ‘leafy’ I think. Tea is basically crushed-leaf soup, isn’t it? Black tea doesn’t taste nearly as bad as green tea to me, the very smell of which revolts me. Black tea’s just sort of slightly bad, just bad enough that I would probably have to add an unhealthy amount of sugar or honey to be able to enjoy it.
if we are also to alert Nick whenever we have a glass of iced tea, i will be posting in this thread almost constantly.
I like fruity tea that tastes like hot juice. :)
I like fruity hot juice teas too! Sometimes I add a whole lot of lemon juice and a bit of sugar to make it really tart. I drink a lot of raspberry green tea with nothing added - sometimes I put chia seeds in it because I like fish eggs in my leaf soup.
I also drink a lot of regular green tea. During the summer I would brew 1 litre of it and keep it in my fridge.
At home we drink orange pekoe, if you add loads of milk and sugar we call it “party tea”.
Next time I go to the bulk food store I will buy some proper loose teas.
I used to regularly partake in afternoon tea, but that has slipped by the wayside as it becomes more summery. Nowadays I more apt to have some rose hip or rooibos after dinner with some Tasmanian leatherwood honey.

Mmm, yes. One of my favorites. Also, not technically tea, but I really like Korean roasted barley tea, which has a similar toasty kind of taste.
A few days ago, I had a surprisingly pleasant stopover in the train station of Duisburg, mostly on account of the fact that, on top of the usual train station Starbucks, they also had an independent tea shop with a wide selection of loose leaf teas, all of which were available to buy in bags, but also to have by the cup, for a standard cup price regardless of how expensive the tea was (about half of what it would cost at the Starbucks). So I first had a cup of jasmine tea in the shop, and then decided to get another cup of something to take away on my train. I ended up settling on some white tea, which smelt and tasted so pleasant that by the time I removed the tea bag and had my first sip, I immediately went back to the shop in order to buy a bag to take home. I made a pot of it last night, and it was fantastic; currently waiting for the water to cool down so that I can brew another one.
I really enjoyed my thermos of tea that I took to work this morning. English Breakfast, in a silk bag (not actually silk, but not paper) and actual tea leaves, rather than that weird dusty stuff you get in normal teabags, brewed for about 5 mins before I took the bag out and added a truckload of milk. No sugar. http://www.maduratea.com.au/shopping.html
I got this Grand Yunan black tea I’ve been drinking in the morning, it has this like warm soft flavor, not harsh like coffee- and it gives me this smooth high to wake up. very nice.
however it has like zero effect for my gf, so ymmv I guess. I like it anyway

What kind did you get?
China White Monkey. Cursory online research shows that its status as white tea is contested (some consider it green tea), but I am not too concerned with the distinction. And since S. claims not to like green tea (unless it has jasmine flowers in it), thinking of it as white tea is preferable anyway.
I just had a cup of coffee. I fail this thread.
white tea, black tea, red tea, evil red tea, red tea devil music edition
Oh, ok, I don’t think I understood at first that it was tea in general which tasted awful to you. I thought perhaps it was a specific tea.

sipping the evil red tea right now, mmmmmmm
I would totally drink evil red tea.
But I don’t have any, so I’m having evil red wine instead.
I’m considering phasing out putting milk in my tea. I had a strong cup of alghazaleen cardamom tea sans milk yesterday and I’m becoming a believer. I still like sugar, though.
Evil red tea, made from the blood of the tea workers
Hey Nick, I had masala chai at breakfast. It came from a tea bag. I’m sorry, but I don’t have time to make masala chai myself most days. Anyway, I had it with porridge. Thought you should know.
Appreciate you keeping me in the loop Em.
Pulled out some Oolong tea, currently steeping. Looks like it’ll be a good one.
I currently have three types of rooibos tea at my disposal. None of which is any of that flavoured abominations. Have had two of them today.
Ringing your bell, inko. Ssssssssip.
It’s Oolong, which I buy because I like the name.
My first experience with Oolong tea was in a can in Japan. It was great.
Also chai for breakfast today.
I had a cup of English Breakfast earlier.
I had peppermint tea on Friday at a party when I was feeling sick (sometimes booze does that to me even when it’s not in a drunk-sick way, my digestive system is weird) and it made me feel better. Also I had some Turkish apple tea today and just remembered I forgot to finish drinking it :-(
Margaret’s Hope 2nd Flush ‘White Delight’ — a white Darjeeling. Not sure how I feel about it. It’s a lot more present in the cup than I expected, also I am drinking it because I have heartburn and it’s the only thing in the house with no (well, little) caffeine, mint, acid, bubbles, or alcohol. Heartburn is bullshit, btw.
I drank some “Sleepytime” tea the other night at a friends house. We sat and drank tea and showed each other music videos on the internet.
Keep up the good work* everyone. I won’t rest until this thread has more comments than Anne’s.
*I initially put ‘keep it up’, before realising that this was playing directly into my rival’s hands.

well done
Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls. Just love this stuff. So fragrant, what a bite, what a worthy partner to these extra hot ginger cookies.
Just made a cup of Baihao Yinzhen, Silver needle organic white tea. I am sure I talked about this on the other board but this is certainly the best tea I’ve had, delicate and delicious.
I only have enough left for a few more cups and the price on this seems to have gone up significantly.
I’ve been drinking this high quality green tea that our friend Reina gave us when we went to Japan in 2010. It is so good. I have kind of been hoarding it, but I decided we should be enjoying it. She gave us some really nice matcha too, but I mostly use that for baking. I never got the hang of making matcha and i don’t have a tea whisk or anything.
man i love matcha, and matcha flavoured everything
Bond Street Afternoon, an English Breakfast-style black. Spoonful of honey. That there’s a stern cup!
Chamomile and lavender. See you all on the other side…zzzzzzzzzz
I’ve been sick the past few days. Lots of green tea. I tried to have some party tea but I couldn’t taste it. I also had some ginger and lemon tea but I couldn’t taste that either.
We were in Chinatown yesterday and I stumbled upon a Ten Ren tea shop and picked up some loose Gunpowder green tea and had a couple very nice cups this morning.
Finest Russian Caravan. My perzh relations were pleased.
We got one of these for christmas:

Our tea consumption has already increased about 200%
Currently enjoying some genmaicha, which seems to be a TNM favorite.
I just had a cup of tea. Had the living bollocks out of it.
