best live performances of 2012
  • Kind of a bookend to the top records of the year, but i figured it could use it’s own thread…so here are my thoughts:

  • Great photos t_p - I always enjoy those!

  • Much more excited about this list than the records one; 2012 has been a much, much stronger year for live music than recorded music as far as I am concerned. I had a really great time at each of these, whereas I’m not sure I even feel that strongly about no. 5 in my album list (also, okay, I haven’t made the album list yet).

List arranged in rough categories of awesomeness (and opener mentioned when they contributed significantly to the awesomeness), as usual:

    Exceptional
    Wilco (Grand Rex, Paris)
    Kazuki Tomokawa (Cafe Oto, London)
Bonnie “Prince” Billy (Bad Bonn, Düdingen)

    Excellent
Kim Doo Soo + Steffen Basho-Junghans (Cafe Oto, London)
John Tilbury & Markus Schmickler + John Butcher (Cafe Oto, London)
    Dirty Three (Trabendo, Paris)
Chain & The Gang (Troc’ Café, Strasbourg)
Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet +1 (Pôle Sud, Strasbourg)
    Menomena (Laiterie, Strasbourg)

    Very Good
    The Fall (Bataclan, Paris)
The Ex + Api Uiz (Laiterie, Strasbourg)
    Bombino (Cheval Blanc, Schiltigheim)
    Bob Dylan (Schlosshof, Bad Mergentheim)
Giant Giant Sand (Jazzhaus, Freiburg im Breisgau)
    Lambchop (Espace Culturel, Vendenheim)
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (Laiterie, Strasbourg)

  • Tomokawa rules this thread

  • I wish I’d seen Tomokawa this year.

As it is, I most enjoyed:

    Swans
    Killer Mike
    Alt-J
    Django Django
    Matthew Dear
    Aesop Rock

    and I also enjoyed:

    Lil B (thanks, jeb!)
    Eleanor Friedberger
    Julia Holter + Hundred Waters
    Divine Fits
    Ryan Bingham
    El-P
    The Mountain Goats
    Esperanza Spalding
    Langhorne Slim

  • oh damn: Kim Doo Soo + Steffen Basho-Junghans
oh damn, pt 2: John Tilbury & Markus Schmickler + John Butcher

    edit: thanks nickinko!

  • That + Tomokawa were all the same festival, and in the brilliant company of alex, and for one evening of Pants, to boot! Definitely a 2012 highlight.

  • I did not go to very many shows in 2012. That said, these were good:

    -Boomgates

    -Screaming Females

    -Terrible Truths

    -The Church

    -UV Race

    -Prissy Clerks

    -Gramma’s Boyfriend

  • I saw Fishbone and The Protomen this year. Probably other stuff, don’t remember. Both shows were awesome.
