I love the look of it. Who made that video, and with what? The color and grain are beautiful
Thanks Zach! It was made by a local guy by the name Chris Gruber. He’s getting back into film after a few years of inactivity. I don’t know what software he used, but I can ask. Seemed like a pretty nice camera.
bad ass!

Okay, well this is kind of hilarious. So my band is practicing tonight, and my buddy texts me and says, “Hey, are you guys playing at Duffy’s (a bar in Lincoln) tonight?” I was like, “Ummmm… No?” He says, “Their website says you are.” I asked the other guys if they had told anyone we would play, and they had not. What the shit? I did some quick internet investigating, and there’s another band based in New Jersey called Goon Saloon. It seems that Duffy’s in Lincoln had contacted Goon Saloon from Jersey (probably thinking it was us, but I dunno for sure) and asked them to play tonight. They said they would, because as it turns out there’s a bar called Duffy’s in their geographic area, and they thought this was who contacted them. Lincoln Duffy’s puts them on their website, links to their Facebook page, and so on. Tonight rolls around, Duffy’s in Lincoln is expecting a band called Goon Saloon to show up, and in the meantime these yokels from New Jersey packed up all their shit and drove to the Jersey Duffy’s intending to play there, and THAT bar had no idea why these yahoos had decided to show up with a bunch of equipment.
Is the internet so difficult to figure out?

THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING
Yeah, that’s incredible.
Here’s something: the new album being released by my old band, Casper & The Cookies, is called Dingbats.
:(
Here’s a video of my band’s set from Monday night at St. Vitus:
woah, impressive!
oh hey here’s a thing:
GIVE US YOUR MONEY
We played a sweet fuckin’ show last night with a couple other locals that we’re really good friends with. It was our first show in months, and was definitely the most people we’ve played for yet. We felt like we played pretty sloppily, but nobody else seemed to notice, and we got a lot of really nice compliments afterward from some local music people that I really respect. Was especially nice to have a such a good turnout since we were competing with a solo Tim Kasher show across town (funnily enough while we were playing at a bar that Tim is part owner of). Another friend of ours approached us afterward and wants to put out a split EP with his band, and we were all “Fuck yes let’s do that immediately.”
That’s great!

I don’t really follow this thread but picked up on this today somehow. I like it a lot. The guitar, drums, bass & sound better than anything of yours I’ve heard. Really nice recording. But to be honest I’d like it a whole lot more if those vocals were further back in the mix. Which isn’t to say they’re bad, but rather just that they are the type of vocals that should be fighting up through the noise. But that’s just me probably. But apart from that this is sounding fantastic and I imagine you guys are tremendous live.
Thanks Scott! We actually had a lot of back-and-forth debate about the vocal mix. For the most part, I wanted them to be a bit more buried as well, but I also refused to sit in the studio for the mixing (it’s one thing if I’m mixing something on my own, but I hate hate hate hate hate assisting other people, esp. when you have four other guys in there all with their own ideas fighting to be heard — that’s just awful and anxiety-inducing and makes me want to kill) so I guess I lost out on that one.
this was supposed to have vocals, that’s why the lag.
anyway, here it is:

Woah, neat!
awesome :)
thanks, y’all! jeb is a pleasure
this is great—and I knew there would be a cat in it, I just KNEW it!

I don’t know why I didn’t reply to this before now, but I’ve been listening to this again and it’s SO GOOD. You can count me as your #1 fan, basically.
thanks mane. os x upgrade crashed my software and winters burn a hole in my pockets, so once i have money to buy a DAW, the new material should soon follow. got about two more collections in the bank so far.
I know you were talking about possibly adding vocals to these, but they work remarkably well without them. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t—I really like the vocals on /—but it definitely works really well as an album as is.
We are in the studio right now!
I saw a photo or two! I’m excited.
I don’t mean to jump in for him, but Myke and his siblings did a cover of “St. Vito’s Ordination song” by Sufjan Stevens that is ridiculously good.
We played our first show in a while last night, and went over pretty well. Two members of a popular local band named for a style of handwriting gave us some nice compliments afterward. We played it all cool, like, “Hey thanks guys,” but inside we were all like “SQUEEEE”
I recorded an album this month! 14 tracks of drumming in some dude’s disorderly bedroom in a house in a not-great part of town, facing the wall, wearing 2 sets of headphones simultaneously so I could get a click, my guitarist in the closet, Finn playing Minecraft on the guy’s futon because I didn’t have a babysitter. It was like college times again. Except the part about the kid.
But anyway, first time I’ve recorded anything in 4 years, probably. I’ll post some stuff when it’s done.
Well, Goon Saloon may be nearing its end as my pal Mark/our drummer is moving away at the end of July. We’ve got one show scheduled in a couple weeks and might try to do one more. Luke and I haven’t really decided what we’re going to do after that, but my preference would be if we decide to keep playing together with other people that it just be a new thing altogether. At least we got everything recorded and mixed, if not mastered and properly released.
That’s always a tough call to make. Both times I was in a band where I was certain we’d stop being a band if any one person left, we ended up continuing on as a band anyway; in Dear Astronaut’s case it didn’t change things much, and the person who left ended up returning anyway. With LL, the music we’re playing is quite a bit different from what we were doing before, and if it weren’t for the through-line of Bjorn’s vocals, I’d probably be into the idea of changing the name and considering it a new project.
Yeah, we all kinda take turns doing vocals and “lead” type stuff, and our personalities mostly work out that way, with all of us being content with equal shares or whatever, no one person really “leading” or song/lyric writing, and I feel like it would be tough to find someone else that jives with Luke and I the same way. I also feel like he’d be pretty offended if we continued as the same band without him, partly for the reasons already described, and partly because he can be a bit overly sensitive and/or petty and has a tendency to harbor unspoken grudges, and I’d rather not have that be the case even if he is 2000 miles away.
Playing what will probably be our last show tonight. So it goes.
So here’s a thing: I’m back in Casper & the Cookies!
Two or three months after I’d decided that maybe I wasn’t going to drum in a band ever again — and six months after I’d last played a lick — Jason messaged me that the Cookies were out of drummers. So I’ve been practicing with them for a couple months now and it’s going splendidly. The music is better than ever. I’m not as good as I was, but I’m good enough, I guess. It’s been fun! We’re playing a show next month (it will have been about a year since my last one) and AthFest later in the summer.
I heard a couple of your songs back in the day. My favourite was the one you said you didn’t actually play on and it had a German title.
That’s awesome, Davy!
Since school’s been going on, I’ve been pretty much bandless. We started recording a full-length, but we were recording on a shoestring budget and our engineer’s computer needs to be fixed/upgraded before we can finish overdubs. Once that’s done and mastered, we’ll probably just release it online, play a couple shows, and then call it quits. I’m a little bummed about it, but it is what it is.
If I’m being totally honest, I really don’t mind not playing music, at least for now.
I didn’t mind it for a while either. It was a busy time and not being in a band made things easier. (We were also playing to empty rooms and that shit gets old quick.) Anyway, it was about six months before I started itching to play again, and by the time my first practice with the Cookies rolled around, I was absolutely ready.
The music is a bit different these days — Jason’s following his weirder muses (Lee Hazlewood, Zappa, etc.) — which is just fine by me. I’ve been listening to more avant-garde stuff myself recently, and as a drummer, I’m much more open to experimenting than I was last time around.
Here’s a video (with surprisingly high production value) from the last record: https://youtu.be/_SeoCSR1878
That’s great, davy! The one time I saw Casper & the Cookies was in your absence, but it was a really fun show.
I’ve been dying to get back to playing again. I basically haven’t touched my drums since I started grad school about 2 1/2 years ago and I’m ready to get back to it. I’m putting out a few feelers. Hopefully something will develop, even if it’s just a chance to jam with someone.
So just as I start settling in with the new band, my old one finally releases the album I recorded with them. You can stream it here: https://titansoffilth.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-release.
I’m pretty happy with it! Glad it finally saw the light of day.
So, Goon Saloon is pretty much donezo, but this local club has been recording tons of bands that have played there over the last couple years for this project, and they just started releasing some of this stuff. It all sounds fucking great, amazing really considering the size and makeup of the room, and there’s music that’s all over the map. They just put up a few of our songs: http://www.liveatoleavers.com/recordings/goon-saloon/ Also some stuff from one of my brother’s bands, Kill County: http://www.liveatoleavers.com/recordings/kill-county/
