Right Here In The Middle - NOW PLAYING
I tried to approach it as if I had no expectations, as if a new band had recorded it in a vacuum, but I don't think it'd cut it even if that were the case.

Does the rest of the world care about the UK's EU referendum?
I think it's partly the ranking system, which they've changed (although I don't remember how it went before and it doesn't seem that different), but also because it's such a close race. The results would be in within hours d…

Cool. I tried fencing when I was 12 and I was not good at it, although it didn't help that I was the only kid in the class.

We're getting old, and sometimes we go to shows by ourselves.
I forgot to put Mogwai in my list above, although I didn't see them by myself.

I'd be surprised if Bowie doesn't top my chart this year.

I think if someone had asked me how I'd feel if Bowie died, I wouldn't have understood the question. Bowie...dead? I would have said I was a pretty big fan before, but I'm more into his music than I realised. That might sound like som…

This was my best year for concerts ever. I didn't go to many, but all the ones I went to were gold except the first one which was merely good. The ones I went to alone are in italics. Ministry Soundwave Festival (Faith No More, Soundgarden, T…

I can't find it online, but the artwork on the CD issue of Skip Spence's Oar looks a lot like the above, minus the octopus. Not the album cover, but the CD itself.

I think I'm going to like The Magic Whip - probably not love it. It is of course not only their first album in 12 years and their first with Coxon in 16, but also their 8th overall, and Albarn has released about as many since then with his vari…

a thread for your band I guess
I heard a couple of your songs back in the day. My favourite was the one you said you didn't actually play on and it had a German title.

I went out last night and saw a band
I saw her album in the best sellers at JB and I checked the national album chart and it's there, too. I think my assumption was a bit off. I mean she may well may more popular in the US, but not unpopular here as I was implying.

I actually wouldn't know a Courtney Barnett song if I tripped over it. She seems to be more popular in the US than Australia. Ditto Darren Hanlon, although he was popular here in the early 00s when nobody had heard of him anywhere else. I saw h…

I've got nothing against going to shows alone, but too often they involve a three hour trip each way for me, so most of the time I fail to convince myself to go, never mind anyone else. The age disparity thing wasn't an issue when I saw Ri…

The new Blur single was very well chosen in that it's neither an entirely new sound nor firmly rooted in any particular part of their past. The new album could sound like almost anything.

I don't think I'm able to rank my favourite REM albums, but it'd look weird if I did because New Adventures in Hi-Fi would be #1 while anything else released after about 1988 would be well down the list. I do really like Monster, howe…

Early last year I embarked on a mission to listen to every album I own (which I'm only a fraction of the way through), but it hasn't affected my chart much. John Lee Hooker wouldn't have 172 plays, but mostly it's bumped up artis…

While I wouldn't say my chart is unrepresentative of my listening habits, it's not entirely accurate for a number of reasons. If I have an album on my computer and/or my iPod and I listen to it on anything other than those things, I often …

I'm kind of annoyed that I bought Burn Your Fire and then Olsen released a deluxe edition with an EP's worth of genuine bonus tracks (no "demo" this or "live" that). I'm selling my Full House DVDs. And now St. Vin…

Yeah, I can't think of the last time I saw a show turn around like that for the better. It just didn't have any real stakes until that reveal about 2/3 through the first season.
